I remember my first time traveling alone which made my excitement for going back to my hometown fade away with all the anxiety. All of us have to travel alone at one time or the other. Whether it is a first time or a regular travel, it is essential to ensure your safety. Thus, here are some of my tips by The Wanderers to ensure safety while traveling alone.
1. Keep Your Phone Charged When Traveling Solo
It is very important to keep your phones charges and/or keep a power bank or charger handy. You might need to make calls, check your vehicle information, check location details, message someone or even use SOS services. However, if you do not keep your phone charged and are in a cab or train, you will have to rely on strangers which might not be the ideal situation for your safety. So before you step out to travel alone, make sure your phone is charged enough for the travel time.
2. Enabling Live Tracking App
If you or your guardians/ friends are worried about the travel plan and want to know whether you are safe or not, you can download an app that lets them track your location along with your device battery etc. I use Personal Safety app by Google which allows me to share location as well as device charging details with the contacts I want. It also has a nice and clean dashboard which also has a handy button to contact the emergency services. However, this app is exclusively available to Pixel devices but apps like Life 360 and Family 360 are available to use for free
3. Share Vehicle Tracking Links
You can also share the vehicle tracking links with your family and friends for additional safety while traveling alone. Many cab service providers send you a shareable vehicle tracking link and for train travels though there is no direct link but you can head to the government website to track your train. In india, you can use the National Train Enquiry System website for trains which only requires your train number and anyone can track the train after entering the same.
4. Keep The Vehicle Tracking App On For Safety
The cab service providers display the route via Google Maps or their own map services with a route from your pickup to drop location. Use it if you do not trust the driver or are just anxious. It is a good resource to be sure and you can also ask the driver if they divert from the mentioned route.
5. Pack Some Water
A tip from my side is to always carry a bottle of water with you whenever traveling alone. You might not find water easily sometimes and some other times leaving the vehicle may not be suitable. Whenever I travel alone via train, I find it inconvenient to leave my things on the seat/berth alone and unsafe, and then go to the station and buy anything. Thus, my suggestion is to always have some water for yourself.
6. Keep Some Food When Traveling Alone
On similar lines, pack some food for yourself. I suggest that you either buy some packed food item or pack home-cooked food. If you are traveling alone, avoid outside food as it may not be that hygienic and if you fall sick, it may make your travel extremely uncomfortable.
7. Do Not Miss Out On Entertainment
My last tip to ensure safety while traveling alone is to not give in to your anxiety. It is important to stay calm when traveling alone. Play some music, movie or series you love. Do not forget your earphones for long travel durations! Also, I suggest you download some music and movies/series as you may face network disturbance. Another good way to enjoy your travel is by accompanying yourself with a novel. Novels that I am currently reading while I travel:
